How to Make an Insurance Claim
No one wants to make an insurance claim as a result of unfortunate circumstances. By following these simple instructions, you can help the insurer process your claim quickly and easily.
No one wants to make an insurance claim as a result of unfortunate circumstances. But, in the event you do find yourself in a car accident, the victim of theft or natural disaster damage, COTA Insurance and our underwriters Allianz and nib Travel Services do our best to make the claims process a positive experience.
By following these simple instructions, you can help them process your claim quickly and easily.
Making a claim: Motor insurance
In the event of an accident:
- Make sure everyone is safe.
- Record the name, address, phone number, email address, licence number, and insurer of any other drivers involved, along with the registration number of their vehicle.
- Try to gather names, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses of any witnesses.
- Notify the police as soon as possible, according to the state regulations.
- If your vehicle is not driveable and you have not notified Allianz of your claim, you can arrange for it to be towed somewhere safe under your comprehensive car insurance policy.
- Submit your claim online, once it is lodged, a friendly claims consultant will contact you as soon as possible. Or you can call claims on 1300 651 777 and a consultant will help you commence the claims process.
If your vehicle has been stolen:
- Report the theft to the police as soon as possible.

Making a claim: Home insurance or landlord insurance
- Make sure everyone is safe.
- If safe to do so, take measures to prevent further damage or loss.
- Call the police (as required) to report any malicious damage, theft, attempted theft, burglary or loss of insured property.
- Keep evidence of loss or damage to your insured property. The more information you have, the more likely your claim can be processed successfully.
- Don’t authorise repairs or replacement unless you are preventing loss, damage or liability.
- Submit your claim online, once it is lodged, a friendly claims consultant will contact you as soon as possible. Or you can call claims on 1300 651 777 and a consultant will help you commence the claims process.
- You will need to tell them the full details of the loss or damage, liability or injury that you might claim for.
- You’ll need to provide any receipts, valuations, photographs, items like instruction manuals to prove a proof of ownership.
